I am looking for my birth mother, Bay Wiemken. I was born on
Nov.7,1948 at Sterling Hospital in Whiteside County Il. The name is
all the information I have except that she was supposed to be a widow
who had five children when I was born. My adopted parents names were
Frank and Elzene Weber of Prophetstown, Il. Do you have any
information or can you advise me where to look?

Reply to COVELL Query below:
Found them in the Prophetstown cemetery with the name mis-spelled as
Corell!! Probably the DAR people just misread the stone.
Corell, Clarence 1852-1927
Emaline E. 1866-1944
Guy Franklin 1898-1937
Carroll Edward 1903-1924
Clarence is in the 1870 census in Tampico Twp.
Covell, Emery 32 M NY Farmer
Julia 37 F NY
Clarence 7 M NY
Although...this makes Clarence, born circa 1863, 20/21 when he married,
but Emeline would have been 38 which seems like quite a difference. I
don't trust census dates unless confirmed, maybe Emery said 17 for
Clarence's age to the census taker but it was recorded as 7. An Ester
Covell (1894-1980) is buried in Tampico Cemetery.
Bob Mosher
From Curtiss M. Trout...more clarification on this line.
(1) Bob, your "Clarence 'Corell'" is indeed "Clarence Covell", but the
one in the Prophetstown Cemetery with Emaline E. Covell and the one shown
in the 1870 census (son of Emery and Julia Covell) are undoubtedly
different people. (2) Emery and Julia's son Clarence grew up to marry
Stella Needham and their family is shown below. (3) Guy Franklin and
Carroll Edward are children of the above Emery and Julia. (4) The Ester
(sic) Covell you found in the Tampico Cemetery who died in 1980 is really
Esther Stenros Covell who married Clarence "Glenn" Covell, son to Clarence
and Stella. She is buried in Tampico with the other Stenros children
(Louis, who was born in Sweden, and Carl, Dorothea, and at least one other
daughter who married at least twice and whose name escapes me at the
moment). (5) Al Covell has done extensive research on the Covells (e-mail
him at
). He has discovered numerous Covells who resided
in Cook Co. and elsewhere in IL outside Whiteside Co. Among them are
Clarence and Emaline (who he took by their ages to be brother and sister).
Since Emaline shows up several times in the family, it is quite possible
that Clarence and at least one of the Emalines were in fact husband and
wife, or perhaps the sibs were visiting when death overtook them.

I am trying to tie up loose ends on a family that reportedly lived in
Sterling, IL in the late 1800's up through at least 1940. George and
Amanda (Hester) Dudley are reported to have lived in Sterling and
perhaps died there after 1940 when their daughter died in Florida and
they "accompanied the body back to Sterling, IL for burial" according
to the newspaper. Since both were already in their 70's at that time
they probably died in the next few years after that. I believe all
four are buried in Sterling, IL. They had two children, Ruby and
Floyd, both of whom died without marrying. This is the end of this
line as far as we know right now. Ruby died on 22 June 1940 in Miami,
FL and a newspaper account of her death indicates she was taken back
to Sterling for burial. Floyd is believed to have died in his teens in
Sterling. They were born in the late 1800's, also in Sterling we
believe. I would like any information on birth dates, death dates,
burial locations, etc. that might be found in published indexes in
Whiteside County, IL. If an obituary could be found, I would like that
also. I would be happy to pay any costs associated with this
information. Charles E. Templer 12221 Wedd Overland Park, KS

Reply to Harrison Tompson Query below:
The Harrison Thompson marriage was reported in the Whiteside Sentinel
of 14 Oct 1875 as:
Married 6 Ovt 1875 by Rev. Geo T. Chrissman; David G. Harrison and
Lizzie W. Thompson, Ustick Twp.
. I did find the graves of William and Jane Thompson, they are buried
in Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL (I grew up in Morrison, my parents,
grandparents, etc. are buried there). Lot 6AE, residence Unionville and
the information agrees except William's date of death is given as 6 Jan
1905 instead of 8 Jan. Knowing their names helps a lot as there are 29
PAGES with Thompson listings in the 1860 census! I checked them all, and
unfortunately none matched your info. The closest was a Wm age 45, born
NY, wife Mary J. age 38 in Lyndon Twp. Did not check ALL the Thompson's in
1870, but there were no families in Union Grove Twp. Ah ha!! Decided to
check Mt. Pleasant Twp. Morrison is adjacent to Unionville with Morrison
in Mt. Pleasant Twp. and Unionville in Union Grove Twp. Found this
household:
Green, John S. 38 M NY Mechanic
Nellie A. 25 F NY
Harry S. 4 M IL
Ivy 1 F IL
Thompson, Lizzie 24 F Sc x x Domestic
So Lizzie was working as a maid in the Green household in Morrison, can
tell it was in town by the occupations of the surrounding households that
this was in town. Looked for other Thompsons in these twps born in
Scotland, but found none.
Found your Harrison family in Union Grove:
Harrison, Thomas 65 M En x x x Farmer
Eliza 34 F En x x
Sarah 22 F IL x x
David G. 28 M IL x x Farmlaborer
Schindler, Gabriel 24 M Sw x x Farmlaborer
One thing about this bothers me, normally children are listed in order
by age. When you see one at the end, out of order that often means that
the person was NOT a child of the head of the Household! However, in the
summer of 1870 when the census was taken, David George was NOT married, so
if he married it was between then and when he married Lizzie in 1875.
Haven't shed any light on David's possible first wife, but from this, I
would suspect that Lizzie's parents were living elsewhere and moved to
Unionville AFTER she married David George Harrison. There was another
Thomas Harrison in Union Grove, younger born in Ireland, so probably not
relevant. I have an 1872 plat map and the two farmed adjacent to each
other at the SW corner of Section 13, about 1 mile south of the west edge
of Unionville.
Found a couple interesting items from death notices in the Whiteside
Sentinel...
21 June 1877 WS; Harrison, Thomas; 72 yrs; d 19 June 1877, Morrison; b
29 May 1805, Glossop, Derbyshire, England; there was a foot of snow on the
ground the night he was born, a phenomena which has not occurred in that
region since at that time of the year; came USA, 1841, from New Orleans,
via Mississippi River; lvd (lived) Beardstown, IL (Cass Co.), 2 yrs, mvd
Union Grove, then Morrison, last fall. Buried Morrison.
14 Aug 1873 - WS; Harrison, Annie; 27 yrs; d 13 July 1873, Clinton,
Iowa; wife of John S.; b England ; mvd with parents to Whiteside Co.,
1861; movd Clinton 2 yrs ago; bur Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison.
Harrison, Charles; 5 wks; d 30 July 1873; son of John S. and Annie
Harrison; bur in same grave with his mother.
18 Mar 1869 - WS Harrison, Willie; 2 yrs; d 14 Mar 1869 at resi of
Thomas Harrison, Morrison; son of John S. and Annie Harrison.
In the 1860 census, the Harrison family is:
Harrison, Thos. 55 M En Farmer
Nancy 54 F En
John S. 26 M En Farmer
Eliza Ann 24 F F En
David G. 18 M IL Farmlaborer
Mary H. 15 F IL
Emily J. 13 F IL
Sarah L. 11 F IL
Charlott E. 9 F IL
Goodwin, Wilber F. 20 M Vt Farmlaborer
So...David had an older brother, John S. who married an Annie, had one
child who died at 2 yrs old, and then Annie apparently died of childbirth
and that child died a few weeks later.

Since you have the 1860 census, I assume you know that her family would
appear to be that of Smith Lamphere, age 52 with son John, 22 and daughter
Harriet, 15 who are shown in Prophetstown Twp. in the same census.

Response to Olmstead Query:
Hi Scott,
Henry Olmstead is buried in the Minson Cemetery in Sec. 18 of
Prophetstown Township.
Olmstead, Henry, d Dec 28, 1866 - 83 years.
Other Olmsteads in the same cemetery are:
Olmstead, Edna C. son of O. & E., d. May 10, 1856 - 1 yrs. (that's what it
says, "son" ) Olmstead, Henriett, dau of H. W. & M. M. d Dec. 31, 1859
Olmstead, another name on the same stone - broken off, bu she died Nov. 6,
1855 - 23 yrs.
From the 1860 census mortality list, Henriett(a) was 5 yrs old, and was
born in Illinois. Looking at the 1860, there were some apparently related
families, and Oliver and Electa (the O & E above) and next door, a Daniel
and Octavia. A farm further away was Henry (75) and Sarah (66), and
apparently his son, Henry W. (30) also with wife, Sarah (29).

Response to MANNING SYLVESTER Query below
Denise,
Tried emailing you, but your mailbox was full!
In the 1860 census, there was a Robert Manning family, and also a Fanny
Manning working as a domestic in another family, did not look like yours.
In 1870, there are SIX Manning entries, but again, none of them were
yours. Checked the Sweger books on Marriages and Deaths, and did not find
any of your family. Also checked all of these and found NO Sylvester's.
While all of these have error/omissions, from my experience am surprised
that there are not at least some entries!
You may want to check adjacent counties, especially Clinton Co., IA.
There was a ferry (later a bridge) between Fulton, IL and Lyons, IA and
families did move back and forth. Or Lee County to the east, there was
also some exchange between the Sterling-Rock Falls area and Dixon, or even
down the Rock River towards Moline.

Response to HUNSBERGER Query below
Pamela,
You would probably be better off requesting birth certificates for Lane
and Hunsberger. The indices that are available for genealogists to search,
etc. are for earlier years, I believe they stop at 1880. The county clerks
office is very helpful, I think they charge $7 for a certified copy and
unfortunately, cannot provide uncertified copies!
Someone MIGHT have the 1900 census and be able to check that...there
were around 8 or 10 LANE families in the 1870 census (latest one I have),
but that would probably be one generation earlier! Another option would be
to check the obituary in the Sterling Gazette. That might give Grace's
parents.

REPLY to COLEMAN/BOWEN Query
Here's some more deaths of Coleman's from the Lyndon Cemetery Records.
COLEMAN, John d. Oct 19, 1881 87 yrs War of 1812 marker
Harriet w. of Orin, d. July 6, 1875 48 yrs.
George so of O. & H. d. Mar 19, 186? 2 yrs 6 mo
S???na (?)w. of William d. Dec 20, 1870 47 yrs
Lillian, dau of Wm. & S. d. Mar 6, 1861 1 yr.
Sabina Belt 1846-1936
These records are alphabetically, so this DOES NOT mean the graves were
together. John is the one who died in Missouri, and S???na is Sophrona,
wife of William. No idea about Sabina Belt COLEMAN. The way the dates are
would indicate a different type of stone, may be unrelated.
There were some BOWENS in the Lyndon Cemetery, two whose ages match
fairly closely, but may be coindences!
BOWEN, Sylvester d. Nov 16, 1876 71 yrs (Lester?)
Hellen Teller, 10/25/1852-4/9/1890 (Hellen?)
From an 1872 Plat Book, William Coleman owned 121 acres on the west side
of what is now State Hwy 78 in section 7 of Lyndon Township, about two
miles north of the intersection with Hwy 2.
This looks like your family in the 1870 census...gives you some
GGGrandparents!

was:

Saphrona B. 36 F NY
George B. 16 M Pa Farmlaborer
Mary 13 F NY
Sophia F. 9 F NY
Franklin G. 6 M IL
John J. 3 M IL
and right next door...
Coleman, John 65 M Ct Farmer
Elsa 64 F NY
Fenton, Stanley 52 M NY Farmer
Laura 50 F NY

Sally 15 F NY Domestic
William 18 M NY Farmlaborer
Arvila 22 F NY
Almira 10 F NY
Charles 8 M NY
Lafayette 4 M IL
Elsa 1 F IL
Living this close, I would expect a relationship, John and Elsa
probably parents of William and Perry Coleman.
From Deaths in Whiteside County by Jayne Sweger:
COLEMAN, John d. recently at Philadelphia, Missouri; a former resi of this
county; buried at Lyndon last Saturday (from the 27 Oct 1881 Whiteside
Sentinel) Would appear that the "parents" John and Elsa and probably
others in the family left Whiteside and moved to Missouri between 1860 and

Reply to NEEDHAM query below.
This looks like your family, in the 1870 census in Prophetstown:
Needham, George 30 M Pa Farmer
Mary 22 F Il
George 1 M Il
There were two other Needham families in Whiteside, William 42 of PA
living also in Prophetstown Twp., and Joseph, 45 of PA living in Tampico
Twp. All being from PA and of similar age, I would suspect a relationship.
Just checked my 1872 Plat map and would be SURE of a relationship! If
you are familiar with section layouts, the NE 1/4 of Sec 25 in
Prophetstown Twp was owned 1/2 by W. Needham, 1/4 by G. Needham and 1/4 by
J. Needham. J. Needham also owned 56 acres adjoining this, but across the
township line in Tampico Twp. and his house was on that property.

Reply to CUNNINGHAM/FERRIS Query below
There are only five officially recorded marriages in Whiteside of male
Cunninghams. These were to females with names of Clara Edna Babcock,
Lizzie Connelly, Grace Devine, Edda Belle Smith and Susan A. Moffat. I had
those purely by luck, because I copied a page with Culbertson marriages
last time I was in Illinois!
Does the birth certificate give the fathers full name? I note in the
1870 census, there is a Ferris family and a Cunningham family living near
each other south of Sterling in Hahnaman Twp. No children in the Ferris
family, several in the Cunningham one. There was another Ferris family in
Fulton with 2 daughters. Both of these Ferris families are too early to be
your Pearl's parents, could be Grandparents.

Patterson, Jas. A. 55 IL Farmlaborer
Mary A. 29 F Pa

This puts Cora's Birth around 1858, Jas. (James?) born in IL around

Response to Heather query below
In the 1860 Census Wm. Hether is listed, the listing is a little
different so will list it all:
366/346 $3000/410
Kosleman, Chas. 42 M NY Farmer
Lucinda 37 F NY
Lorinda 17 F NY
Rhoda A.14 F NY
Elizabeth 12 F NY
Austin 10 M NY
Chas. 7 M NY
Jason 5 M NY
Wm. 6m M IL
/347
Martin, Geo. 29 M NY Farmer
Caroline26 F NY
Julia 7 F IL
Franklin 1 M IL
Hether, Wm. 27 M Ir Farmlaborer
The 366/346 and 366/347 are what throw me...the census starts out with
1/1, 2/2, etc. If place is unoccupied it would be like 4/ so the next one
would be 5/4 and the numbers get out of sync. This would seem to mean that
their was perhaps one farm with two dwellings, the Martin family lived in
the second, Kosleman's were the owners since the property value is listed
with them, and Wm. Hether was a hired man living with the Martin's.
Ustick Township and Clyde Township (to the east) had a LOT of settlers
from Ontario, esp. near Toronto, including Jehu Mosher, my GGGrandfather.
Other families from Canada were Lavalla, Hollingshead, Martindale, Rice,
Lameraux, Cochran, Currie, Blue, Kelly, Shaukster, Hough and others. Many
came about 1838/9 and at least some were involved in a short lived
revolution called the Patriot War. I have not found too much on this, it
apparently did not last long, but some of the participants feared
retribution and left Canada. It may be that only a few of the immigrants
to Whiteside participated, but that they then recruited others. Several
mills were built at this time, my GGGrandfather was a millwright and may
have been recruited by someone who had moved a year before.
I do NOT find any Heather or Hether in the 1870 census.

Whiteside County has been home to several generations of some of my
family. Please visit my home page and see if you know the person, and
can place their ancestors. Mary Jane HOOVER aka Grandma Stalcup to my
grandmother Emma-Jane. Was living in Morrision, IL in 1907 and still
living in 1927 when grandma recieved a photo from her at Christmas.
Mehitable Mae APPLEBEE of New Hampshire, who in her second marriage
married Joshua L. Hollinshead, my greatgreatgrandfather. Her first
marriage was in Vermont, but she and son travelled to IL where she
married Joshua. Probably never in IL, but related anyway is Sarah Ann
SMOCK who was Mary Jane HOOVER's mother-in-law. I'm also interested in
finding more info on, and descendents of, Jacob HOLLINSHEAD Jr. whose
descendents immigrated to Whiteside following the Patriots War in
Canada, and his son John HOLLINSHEAD who in fact was one of the first
settlers in Whiteside, and his wife, Elizabeth RUSH who was also a
resident, and whose mother, Julia Ann was one of the first adult
deaths in Whiteside County. These two Rush women are tied somehow to
Benjamin Rush, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Thanks for
your help, (and I sure hope html works on query pages!!) Robert

Need info on Olaf A. JOHNSON and wife Augusta Charlotta SHOBERG. They
moved to Morrison, Ill in Whiteside County in about 1912ish.They had
sons Ray and Earl and daughter Virginia who was handicapped with them.
Olaf had brother Nels, could have last name of Andersons instead of
Johnson, since they came from Sweden at different times. And he has a
sister Mrs. Elaine PETERSON. They share a Large tumbstone with Leanord
and Edith ANDERSON at Grove Hill Cemetery. There children Bessie and
Ben Anderson are buried there also. Olaf, Augusta, and Virginia
JOHNSON are on the other side of the large tumbstone. Along with
Olaf's second wife Mrs. Jennie Brown. I have really nice picture of
the JOHNSON family (poss. reunion) in about 1928ish. I only know 5
people in this picture of many people. Would like to find out more
about this family. They are my great grandparents (thru son Raymond,
who came to Washington state to live and die) and their obits make
them sound so very special. I need lots more info. Am Willing to share
what info I have. I have been to Morrison several times looking for
them in this very lovely town. Please help.

Jo,
I found your family in the 1860 census in Hanaman Twp, but NOT in the
1870.
Duffy, Owen J. 48 M Ir Farmer
Jane 32 F Ir
Thomas 11 M Ir
Daniel 9 M Il
Judith 7 F Il
Peter 1 M Il
From the ages, it would appear that the family came to Illinois around
10 years earlier (Thomas born in Ireland, Daniel in Illinois) and they may
have left before the 1870 Census. Looked at Hahanman on my 1880 Plat Book
and the name Duffy did not appear. It would probably be possible to get
someone to search the Grantor/Grantee recordings of land transfers in
Whiteside to determine when and to whom they sold the land.

Reply to WEBB Query below.
Jonell,
You may have this, but the full dates for your Webb's in Franklin
Methodist or Cottonwood Cemetery are:
Webb, Charles G. June 1, 1812 to Dec 29, 1873
Webb, Sarah Jane, wife of C. G. Apr 22, 1813 to Mar 26, 1846
These came from the publication by the Whiteside Genealogists which was
based on reading of the stones. Don't know whether there are any other
records of burial, although you might try some of the following:
Check with the County Clerk for Death records, they are pretty good
in Whiteside.
Check with the Methodist Church in Morrison (815) 772-4030 to see if
they know if the Franklin Mehtodist Church still exists, or where the
records went if it doesn't.
By the way, I noticed that a Charles G. Webb married a Mathilda I.
Phillips on 3 July 1873 service by Rev. Geo. T. Crissman at the Residence
of R. M. Thompson. Also Cicero Webb married Joesephenie McKenzie (both of
Ustick) on 10 Nov 1869 by Rev. S. F. Millikan. Rev. Millikan was pastor
of the Congregational Church in Morrison (the Odell Building, see Morrison
Historical Society Web page) and the father of Robert Millikan who won the
Nobel Peace Prize in the 1920's. From the dates, these may have been
Grandchildren of your George G. Webb.

I have been working for years on trying to find the ancestors of my
great-grandfather, Walter Gish BOLLINGER, but have been completely
stopped because the 1880 census for Whiteside County, Illinois, which
lists him at age 3 years shows him and (I suppose) his 1 year old
brother, George, enumerated with the Henry HORN family and the Anna
ALDRICH family. No other BOLLINGERs show up in the county at this
time. His death certificate indicates that his father was from
"Switzerland (French)". I am relatively sure that his mother's maiden
name was GISH. I have been stuck there despite my best research. The
